Our bioconversion experts (the flies) are hatched and reared in a climate controlled environment and monitored for health and quality at every step.

BREEDING
Under controlled conditions, it is possible to intensively rear Black Soldier Fly. Native to sub-tropical regions, they require warm and humid conditions for optimal mating. This is critical as the adult flies only live for 1-2 weeks. |
EGGS & HATCHING
The female is capable of laying a single clutch of up to 500 eggs. The eggs take approx. four days to hatch after which they go through six stages of growth, growing from < 1mm to 2.5-3.5 cm in length. |
GROW OUT
After hatching, the tiny larvae are fed with a series of customized diets based on their growth phase. This is to maximise their nutritional qualities for our end consumers. Black Soldier Fly Larvae can eat twice their body weight in food per day; that's equivalent to a human eating 1,400 hotdogs! |
HARVEST & PROCESSING
The prepupae (before hatching into an adult fly) are dark brown/black in colour. Typical nutritional analysis indicates they are approx. 40% protein, 12-28% fat and 8% minerals. The prepupae can be dried, milled into a meal or processed into an oil for use as an ingredient. Even the frass (waste) is an excellent organic fertiliser. |
