The Future of Food

A PROBLEM WORTH SOLVING
"We will need to increase food production by 70% to feed the population of 2050
UN Food & Agriculture Organisation

OUR ENVIRONMENT IS UNDER PRESSURE

RESOURCES
Water, land and energy are under increasing pressure.
Food supply chains are becoming more and more competitive.
We need to use what we have more sustainably.

PROTEIN
Meeting the future domestic and international demands for protein is a significant challenge for Australian producers.
The cost and supply of protein for livestock production is increasing.

CLIMATE CHANGE
The impact of climate change is pressing. Inclement weather and natural disasters can significantly impact food supply chains.
Meanwhile, the impact of food production and food waste on greenhouse gas emissions continues to grow.

"Can agriculture meet unprecedented demand for food in ways that ensure that the use of the natural resource base is sustainable, while containing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change? "

Below are some salient points taken from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's report on the Future of Food and Agriculture.
  • The world’s population is expected to grow to almost 10 billion by 2050, boosting agricultural demand.
  •  Food losses and waste claim a significant proportion of agricultural output, and reducing them would lessen the need for production increases.
  • Climate change affects disproportionately food-insecure regions, jeopardizing crop and livestock production, fish stocks and fisheries.
  • Needed are innovative systems that protect and enhance the natural resource base, while increasing productivity.
  •  Global per capita consumption of seafood has been increasing and currently exceeds 20 kg per person per year. This trend is expected to continue as incomes rise and consumers become more aware that fish and fishery products can be a healthy alternative to meat from farm animals.
  • When food is squandered, so too are the water, soil, biodiversity and other natural resources and inputs that were used to produce it and move it through the supply chain.
